How does someone best leverage PKI to solve the problem of having to remember multiple usernames and passwords when working in an environment where you are not only being authenticated by your own domain but also by other services such as databases and terminal emulator sessions delivered via your LAN and also by services on the WAN where websites may well require separate usernames and passwords?

Well, applications need to be written to take advantage of PKI. Products exist for many database packages and for Windows NT to allow you to do this. As far as external sites, you have to talk them into doing this. One of the downfalls of PKI is that everything needs to be re-engineered to take advantage of it. (This doesn't even take into account chains of trust or software vs hardware devices to store your certificates.)

The major PKI vendors (Entrust) and others (such as RSA) have toolkits to allow you to PKI-enable applications.
