Multiple Nics w/ NT4 on new PowerEdge 24

By TomSal ·
Hi. I'm trying to get NT Server 4.0 up and running on a brand new out-of-the-box Dell 2450 Rack system. It has 3 Nic's (1 is embedded). They were factory installed. When I'm trying to install the NOS it appears fine until I assign the computer name,at which point it says the name already exists. This is clearly not true, I set up the LAN clients and I know the name is unique. I suspect bad network connectivity, but anyone else with advice?

I assume that you have checked to see that no CID file exists with that name. If the name you are trying to use is close in spelling to a restricted word, that could have a bearing on this. Try a different name, ZZZZZZ, and see what happens.

Check to see if you have netbeui bound to the network adapters. If you do unbind it from two of the nic's, that is if you need it at all

That's the problem I tried this , still no go. That's what stumps me - first time this happened in 5 years of on the job experience.

Are you trying to install drivers for all 3 NICs during the basic NT install? Try doing the install first with just one NIC - if the OS tries to install the others then deselect them. Then install the other NICs after you've done the basic NT install and installed the latest Service Pack. Also don't install NetBEUI unless you are actually doing to need it. Hope this helps!

Its three NICs but they are using one multiport driver. Two NICs are PCI cards, the last is embedded. I know all about NETBEUI, I've been doing this job for years - but I can't convince our MIS VP that you don't need it. He wants it for using Named pipes while programming with SQL Server. Thanks for your input though.
