Multiple RAS Connection

By ashok_g ·
Hi

I just setup RAS to our NT and SBS server. We currently have one phone line and one modem, where usually director dial in to server. Now we want to have multiple people to dial in at once.

My question is will one phone line and one modem will be able to do this with the help of other software or we need seperate phone line and modem for each connection? What will be the better in terms of security, reliability, easiness or how can do all these things?

Thank you for your reply

Regards
Ashok

Ashok,

With only one phone line/modem, you can only have only one person connected at a time. You would need to increase the phone lines/modems to increase concurrent users.

One option not involving dial-up would be to use PPTP through the Internet (if your environment support this feature of NT RAS).

Good luck.

Hi, as the first respondent noted, you need more than one phone line and modem for multiple, concurrent ras connections. The pptp (creating a vpn) is a good idea since each person would connect to the internet - using an encrypted and secure channel- to then connect to your server. So basically, users would get on the internet and connect to the server via a phone book entry set up for your server (this is also very cost efficient if users are calling long-distance and charging back to your office). You'll find lots of info. about pptp, vpn (virtual private network) on microsoft's site as well as searching windows2000 magazine online. Good luck.
