Must I re-install NTServer service pack?

By CompleteRookie ·
I read somewhere that you had to re-install NT Server service pack or fixes after any system changes including adding/removing new software. Is this true?

Must I re-install NTServer service pack?

The service pack will only install fixes based upon what you have installed on your machine. So yes, you need to reinstall the latest service pack after installing other software. You will also need to reinstall any hotfixes that were released after the service pack.

It is really not neccesary on every software install. Like if you install Acrobat Reader, etc.

However, if you install or setup additional services like DHCP, etc you SHOULD reinstall the SP. This will update your files and registry because theservice uses older files and settings.

The simple rule is this: Any operation that causes system files older than the service pack to be installed (for example, any time you are prompted to install files from the original Windows NT Server CD) should then be followed by reinstalling the service pack.

This includes the following:

-Adding any components that install files from the original Windows NT CD.

-Performing an emergency repair operation that causes files to be restored that are older than the current service pack files.

-Restoring from a tape backup that was created before the time the current service pack was installed

-Installation of applications that may install older components.

Must I re-install NTServer service pack?

Service Packs contain updated versions of specific files. For example, winsock.dll that came with the original version of NT may be overwritten with a new version of that file when you install the service pack. When you add a feature to NT, like DHCP Server for example, it may overwrite a service pack file with the original file that came with NT. By reinstalling the service pack, you ensure that you have the most recent versions of files.

I see no reason for reinstalling a service pack after adding any non-NT software, as the software is not really affecting NT files.

When you remove software, you are removing files. Unless someone corrects me, there is no need to reinstall a service pack after removing software, as you are not installing old NT files that would overwrite service pack files.
