You upgraded to Windows 7 from something and now your external HDD is unreadable is that correct?

Depending on what you upgraded from it could be something as simple as the Windows 7 Partition which uses improved Security is incapable of reading the Partition on the external HDD because the Security is missing. This happens when the External HDD was formatted in a early version of XP or earlier M$ Formating options or a Non M$ Format Utility.

When you go into Drive Management what does it tell you about the external HDD?

Is it even listed?

If it's not listed open the Device Manager and see if there are any devices which lack drivers pay particular attention to USB Hubs as a possible culprit here. If there are missing drivers you'll need to visit the NB Makers Web Site and download the 7 Drivers for your Make & Model NB.

The other thing that could have happened here is that because 7 restarts the system a couple of times when it gets installed and you had the External Drive plugged in when the system restarted you could have corrupted the Partition Tables on the external drive because it was never dismounted before the system was restarted. When a system restarts instead of safely dismounting the drive it just removes the power from the drive and leaves it to it's own devices to park the heads and make the drive safe. This leads to Partition Table Corruption sooner rather than latter.

You can try running [b[chkdsk /r on the external drive to see if that fixes it but you may need a Data Recovery Application to rebuild the Partition Tables. Here is a short list of some of the more popular options.

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered for use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.
