The drive may be dead or dying.

WD has diagnostic tools you can use to see if the drive is still viable.

DId you "Safely Remove Hardware" ?

by 1bn0 In reply to MY BOOK WD ESSENTIAL EDIT ...

Removing a USB drive abruptly from Windows can cause the MBR/partition table to become corrupted.

This is caused when Windows is still attempting to write data to the drive as you are removing it.

Free recovery utility. It may be able to mount your drive in spite of the corruption and allow you to copy your data from the device.

Alernatively Active@partition Recovery
is a commercial product, but I have always had success with this program where others have failed miserably on the same device.

For starters download the WD Diagnostic Data Lifeguard Utility

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to MY BOOK WD ESSENTIAL EDIT ...

from here

But I don't think this will show any problems. This happens most times because when the drive is stopped the user does not use the Safely Remove Option within Windows so the Partition Information gets deleted on the HDD.

If the Data is Sensitive and really needs to be recovered you need to take the Drive to a Data Recovery House and pay them accordingly.

However if it would just be nice to have back there are several Applications that can be used to recover the Data. Just remember if this is Important Data the more you mess with it now the more that the Data Recovery House will have to do to recover the Data and the more it's going to cost you. If you mess up you can easily add $25,000.00 to the recovery costs.

You can try WD's option if you like it is listed here

Seagate has a Utility which costs you but I'm told works quite well in situations like this it is located here

Then there are the more commonly used applications like the short list here

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered for use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.

WD Blows

Had a 500GB My Book. One year and 28 days
later it was dead. Out of warranty of
course. Get a Maxtor or Seagate, I forget
which of these has a five year warranty.
