My Compaq Evo freezes

By eugee ·
i've just upgraded my windows live messenger to the last version, the system had to restart and since then, it just hangs where the monitor shows in big red "COMPAQ" and stays that state for ever.
ALso, the LED for the floppy is permanantly on at this stage. Would anybody knows what's happening and how to go around it?
Thank you.

Have you tried to access Safe Mode ? ...

By hitting F8 repeatedly after power-on. This might take you into Safe Mode from which you could uninstall the live messenger upgrade.

If it turns out you can't get access to Safe Mode, try to get into your BIOS - there should be a message line at the bottom of your initial screen that tells you which KEY to hit BEFORE the Compaq screen appears, which will take you into the BIOS.

When you get into the BIOS, look for an option to turn OFF the 'Splash Screen' (which is the 'big red COMPAQ') so that you can read what the computer is doing, hopefully showing which point the computer is hanging at.

*Which EVO do you have and which flavour of Windows?
