'My Computer' locks up pc

By BHunkus ·
Our GM has a new Dell desktop with Windows 98. Double clicking on 'My Computer' locks up the pc, (intermittently, but often). CTRL/ALT/DEL does nothing. The pc has to be rebooted. We have a small NT network running SBS. He has nothing but standard apps running on his system. Any ideas why this might be happening???

It definately has to do with something inside My Computer. All your drives are listed and if you open My Comp this initializes them. Have you seen behaviour like this when you open windows explorer or the control panel from the start menu or dial upnetworking. Anything that is in the My Comp window can be the cause. So try elimenating factors. you could reboot into safe mode and try the operation there and see if you get the same result. In safe mode only standard/necessary drivers are loaded. The cdrom wont be there as for modems & printers. If it doesnt do it in safe mode you might want to eliminate your drives. Just disconnect them one by one and try the operation after booting back up.
Also scanreg /fix might help to repair a corruptregistry or run sfc and scan for altered files. That's what i can think of now with the available info. Good luck.

Don't know why, but when we disconnected the network drives then remapped them it seemed to stop! Thanks!

I would guess there's some sort of conflict with one of the ide )or scsi for that matter) devices.

I would first jsut to try to disable everything (like the CD, zip drive, etc..) in the device manager and see if you can identify sometihng that way.

From my experience, something like this occurs when the DMA setting is checked under the CD-Rom and usually unchecking it takes care of the problem.

Seemed to be a problem with the network drives. We disconnected and remapped them. Seems to have stopped locking up. Thanks anyway!
