My Docs Access Denied

By dstockham ·
After pulling a hard drive from an old system and trying to copy or open files in My Documents I receive "Access Denied". I have the users login password but am unsure how to unlock the file.

Safe Mode

Boot XP-home into Safe Mode (Press F8 a few times when starting up) as an administrator. Now use Explorer to go to the folders etc. on your old drive, right-click them, select Properties, click the Security tab. Click Advanced, then Owner tab. In the Name list select your (administrator's) name. Mark the Replace Owner on subcontainers and objects check box. Click OK, Yes and OK. And that should do it.
