My dvd/cd rw Drive is missing

By mobiyob ·
I have had my hp dv6000 series laptop for a year now and everything has been working ok.
Suddenly I go to record a data dvd and windows media player cannot locate any installed dvd drives.
I am stumped.
Under device manager there is no DVD or CD drive icons or anything. I went to "add hardware", no DVD drive option either.

I am running power iso and recently uninstalled it because under "my computer" it showed two mounted drives even though the main DVD/CD drive was missing. this is crazy.
Did my computer just take a ****?

So I did a clean install with my operating system because I thought that would alleviate my problems. Still, no dvd drive letter under 'my computer', no nothing....

The cd/dvd drive opens with I push the button. It even sounds like it is reading the disks index, but nothing comes up on screen.

Again, I'm stumped.

If anyone can help that would be great.

I had same problem

I had a coworker with the same laptop and same problem. I worked on it for hours until i said take it to a repair shop. If you take the drive out and put in a known good one it still won't work. Put the so called bad drive in a different laptop it works. I did get the drive to work one by pulling the drive out and putting it back in. But that only worked once.

Two Possible Reasons "UPDATE"

by mobiyob In reply to My dvd/cd rw Drive is mi ...

There is two potential reasons for this that I have found.
1.) Windows registry needs repair. Do this by deleting UPPER AND LOWER DVD ROM FILTERS.
1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters
* UpperFilters.bak
* LowerFilters.bak

2.) Replace DVD Drive. Drive may be dead.
