Windows default is to download updates and then share those updates to the web. It’s not a bug.

Another question that cannot be answered without more information. What physical hardware and internet provider is in use? Is this a recent development? Any recent hardware/software changes? Be more specific about these “spikes”.

Ethernet spiking can be frustrating, but there are several potential reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and resolve the problem:

      Check for Physical Issues:
Inspect your Ethernet cables for any damage or loose connections. Replace any faulty cables.
Ensure that all connectors are securely plugged into their respective ports.

      Restart Your Modem and Router:
Power cycle your modem and router by unplugging them for about 30 seconds and then plugging them back in. This can help clear out any temporary issues.

      Check for Network Congestion:
If you have multiple devices connected to your network, it’s possible that network congestion is causing spikes. Try disconnecting or pausing devices that are not in use.

      Update Network Drivers:
Make sure your Ethernet adapter’s drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues.

      Scan for Malware:
Run a thorough malware scan on your computer to check for any malicious software that might be affecting your network performance.

      Test with a Different Device:
Connect another device to your Ethernet connection to see if the issue persists. This will help determine if the problem is specific to one device.

Contact Your Internet Service Provider (ISP):
If you continue to experience spikes, your ISP may be experiencing network issues or outages. Contact them to check if there are known problems in your area.

Check for Background Downloads or Uploads:
Ensure that no background downloads or uploads are occurring on your device, as these can cause network spikes.

      Monitor Network Usage:
Use network monitoring tools to track your network usage and identify any specific applications or devices causing the spikes.

      Update Firmware:
Ensure that your modem and router have the latest firmware updates installed.

      Consider Environmental Factors:
Interference from neighboring Wi-Fi networks, microwave ovens, cordless phones, or other electronic devices can affect Ethernet performance. Try to minimize such interference.

      Consult a Professional:
If you’ve tried all the above steps and are still experiencing spikes, it may be time to consult a professional network technician to diagnose and resolve the issue.

By systematically working through these steps, you can often pinpoint the cause of Ethernet spikes and take appropriate action to improve your network stability.
