My External Hard Drive cannot be detected on File Manager or Disk Managemen

By lamkenneth2008 ·
Hi Guys,

I've been using my 100GB external USB external hard disk for nearly 2 years now. it does not require any external power source. my laptop is a fujitsu toughbook running on XP SP3 with 2 usb ports. i've been using a usb mouse and it is working fine with both usb ports, so i guess there's nothing wrong with the usb ports.

there were 2 occasions in the past where the external hard disk could not be detected on my laptop. however, it somehow resolved in itself in the past within a couple of days. on the 2nd occasion, i believed i changed the usb cable, and that could be one of the cause of the "solution".

currently, i ran disk management and file manager and the external hard disk could not be detected.

initially, it could be detected on my friend's laptop which was running on ubuntu. i foolishly didn't backup the data in the hard disk thinking that it would somehow "fix" itself like before. after a few days, it could no longer be detected on my friend's ubuntu laptop.

is there any way that i can salvage the information in the hard disk, i have some very crucial research documentations as i've been using that as my sole backup. also i have the only pictures of my late parents too.

i'll be truly indebted if you could help me fix my external hard disk.

please do not hesitate to email me should you need further clarification...

thanks sooo much in advance!!

best wishes,
