my hp laptop on the fritz, help me please

my laptop says "unformated active partition or missing os. push any key to boot from disk" every time i boot it up and can't get it to do anything other than go to the bios settings. is there a free way to fix this or what. only had it for 2 months. please help

Can you boot off a CD?

If you can try testing the HDD with something like The Ultimate Boot CD HDD Testing Utility available here


Of you can try a Live Linux to test the HDD something like Knoppix STD can read NTFS Partitions so you can see if the drive is working or corrupt. You can either buy a copy or download a copy from here


If you have a backup of your data just RMA the faulty unit back to HP for repair/Replacement.

If the HDD is no longer working it gets expensive to recover your data from there and HP will just erase the Drive and reload it with the basic Install that the unit came with so you'll loose any data that you had there as well. But if it's not worth the Several K or more to recover the data just return it to HP for repair.
