My Laptop won't recognise my Teac cd-224E cdrom

By oz.swaggy ·
I recently replaced my original external cdrom with a TEAC CD-224E. My laptop doesn't seem to want to recognize it. When I try to boot my computer with the cdr attached to my computer, my computer refuses to start up.

What was the original problem?

Why did you replace the external unit?
Is this unit identical to the old one?
Have you downloaded the latest drivers for this new unit?
Does it appear in Device Manager?

Old one was destroyed in an accident.

No the new one is not identical to the replaced item and I have downloaded the appropriate driver for the new one. My laptop doesn't recognise it anywhere on my computer. I hooked up a borrowed unit and it worked well, so this would eliminate the connection. I have seen the new unit work on another computer, so I am really stuck for answers.
