Monitors do not last long as they used to anymore... especially those that are used day after day.

The Packard Bell monitor may not be able to handle the higher resolutions. You need to find out what resolution your friend was using and try the various refresh rates.

The Sony monitor should have lasted longer, but we don't know which model or how long your cousin used it.

Sounds like it's time to invest in a new monitor and if you can afford it, go with the extra warranty.

If you cannot afford anything but a repair, then choose the better of the two monitors (which would probably be the Sony) and see what they will charge to repair it. Know that repairs on monitors can be great, but sometimes they are not. It depends on the quality of the replacement parts and the remainder of the other compenents within the monitor. Most of the "repaired" monitors I have seen, have never been as good as new; but I have a friend who has a monitor that has lasted two years after a repair (that's a NEC monitor though).

Anna is correct, but you may also want to check your video adapter. Go to Control Panel>>System applet>>Devices tab to see what kind of adapter is installed. You can check your driver versions in the adapters properties page. Then go to either the adapters' manufacturers site to check for new drivers or one of several driver sites. Here are some:

http://www.mrdriver.com/

http://www.driverguide.com/

http://www.driversplanet.com/

http://www.driverzone.com/

Good luck and let us know how it worked out for you!
