My Network Places doesn't show computers

By Hamad Hussain ·
I have one computer with Windows XP, Under My Network Places on the XP machine it doesn't show other machines. I think part of this is because I cannot see the actual icons for the opposite computer in the Networkplaces. Can anyone steer me right?

First of all check connectivity - are you part of a workgroup or domain?

Can you ping the other computer?? If so check to make sure the Computer Browser service in services.msc has been started.

Check your workgroup name

I am assuming for now that you are talking about a workgroup.
If so you need to check your system properties/computer name tab and make sure all your computers share the same workgroup name.
If that is correct and you still cant access the workgroup you will need to run the network setup wizard and restart the computer.
Make sure also that all your computers have file and printer sharing enabled and in the network connection settings enable netbios over tcp/ip
finally if you have 3rd party firewall software like norton make sure your network is "trusted"
