My PC is to slow

By siddeeqah ·
My PC seems to be moving at a very slow pace and I have tried almost everything to see what is the problem.

Can you give me some suggestions.

I would start by checking for spyware/malware. Download Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are on Install/update and run. Also run a virus scan. If you don't have one,

Those options should help with any speed computer. Post what you have for system specs. If you?re running XP, you'll want a minimum of 256meg memory.

Hope these suggestions help.

Are you doing regular system maintenance such as defrag? Also, you might want to check you hard drive to ensure it has ample free space.

Have you tried online virus/spyware scanners, just in case?

A few things to do:

1) Check for adware/spyware
2) Run a check disk, disk cleanup and defrag
3) Do a virus, worm, Trojan scan
4) Run a program like System Mechanic to delete "garbage" that has built up over time, aka bad shortcuts, temp files, etc
5) Clean up your registry
6) Check out your startup file

What Operating system are you running?? If it is Windows 9x/ME, and the installation is more than a couple of years old, it may be a situation of good old registry bloat, which causes Win9x/ME systems to run slower and slower as they get older - a bit like us!

The only remedy for that is to backup all your data, emails, email accounts, favourites, etc, take note of your internet account setting and anything else like that, and then format the disk and reinstall. It will perform wonderfully for a time after that.

If it is WinNT/2000/XP, please disregard the above.

Good luck,

Looking at the OS and Programs is one thing, what everyone forgot to mention is the physical specifications of the PC and what you use it for.
What would be nice ot know:~
CPU speed
Amount of RAM
Hard drive specs / format

What the PC is used for.

Depending on what you use it for, minimum specifications can vary. I always love this example.....
Windows XP WILL install on a pentium 133 with 512 of RAM, but it doesnt like running anything else.....

Windows XP will on the other hand love a fresh install on a 2000mhz processor and 512 meg of ram and will also love running almost anything you throw at it :)

Another thing, do you have a lot of icons by your clock? If so, got RUN type MSCONFIG and chooose the last tab that says STARTUP. In there are a lot of checked boxes. Uncheck the ones that you know what they are. All those programs that auto launch take up a mass of RAM. Their independent, so use them that ay. An example would be AOL. Why have the PC auto start it if your not using it all the time. It uses RAM to do this, not imagine a hord of programs doing this all at once. So whatever RAM is leftover, thats your to use, and it will slow you way down. Goodluck, Scott.
