My PC won't boot

By dinzer ·
My PC will only boot in safe mode. Here's what happened:

I connected my printer (USB) to my computer while the computer was up. When I did, the PC shutoff and rebooted. The printer was not on, and I have had the printer hooked up before.

Now, when I boot, the PC hangs on the Windows ME logo screen. It boots in safe mode.

Any suggestions would be great!

Question- is the printer hooked up when it boots into safe mode- does boot up normally without printer? Try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers. Make sure you install the usb software before hooking up printer. Can also try system restore feature in WinME. Restore back to a previous time when pc was working. Will boot into safe mode caused by corrupt drivers or system files.
have fun! if that doesn't work can go from there.

I totally disconnected the printer and cable. no go...

I uninstalled the printer. no go...

I did the restore. no go...

I suspect a hardware problem, but that's my weak area. Thanks for the feedback.

I have had similiar problems with USB devices. This generally works.

Disconnect USB cable
Goto the Device manager and delete the USB Hub (HID Device)
Then Reboot
It should start in Normal Mode
Install Printer software - it should ask for WinMe disk to install USB driver.
Reboot
Wait until Windows Has completely loaded
Hook uo USB Cable

Good Luck!

I went to device manager and eliminated anything that had to do with that printer and the USB stuff. No luck...

I have even formatted the harddrive and restored the PC back to its original configuration. It still won't boot normally.

Thanks for the advice.

Insert the startup disk in drive A:,boot computer and at the startup screen, hit button to enter the CMOS control panel, check to see if the hard drive is listed first in configuration list, make sure hard drive is set to Auto, save changes and reboot
At the command prompt, type FDISK /MBR,reboot and then run the optionwithout cdrom support, this will load the system files,if this does not work, you may have a drive failure or boot sector failure
If computer will boot in safe mode, use the run box and type in MSCONFIG,uncheck each box one at a time
Check the controller to the hard drives

OK, I feel stupid. I tried everything suggested and nothing worked.

So, out of desperation, I took the dang thing apart...I disconnected all of the cables, blew out the dust, then put it all back together. Now, IT WORKS!

Man, I love computers....

Thanks for your help.
