    my puter crashed..HELP

    Locked

    by _ladyhawk_2 ·

Hi everyone, I’m Liz…and I’m an artist who knows very little about computers but love to use them. Having said that…I am at a total loss as to how to fix my problem. My computer crashed the other night and only came back in safe mode. (that’s my C drive) My D drive is also affected and three months worth of work is “unavailable” to me because something is missing … I’ve tried scan disking the D drive which is supposed to fix the errors as it goes…but when it was done…I still couldn’t access any of my files in the D drive…its like something vital is missing, but I don’t know what.
I’m really in a bind here, as I’m supposed to be taking orders soon for the very art work that I can’t get out of my computer….Can someone help?>
(I should have taken a course I know..but it makes no sense to me…) sigh.
    thanx someone….please.?????

Well, Nat….I’m using Windows ME…and somehow…word 97 got into the mixture.???
I haven’t been horsing around with anything.
The whole thing went down crash…and came up in safe mode. I tried restoring to an earlier date..but that failed too.I scanned my D drive hoping to fix any problems..but no luck there either.
it says that I don’t have proper access to the files that I made…
I am totally baffled….was a driver eliminated or something? I even uninstalled my graphix program thinking that if I reinstalled it..anything missing would be restored…again..dead end.
        hope this helps.
        Liz

You say your c: and d: drive are separate, do you know if they are two physically seperate drives or are they different partitions on one physical drive? If they are physically sepatate, drive d: may be damaged. Do you hear any strange sounds comming from your PC? You will probably need to take the PC to a competent repair shop, where are you located? I also suspect a virus.

The c and d drive are separate…they are two physically separate drives.
I was just checking out doing another scan and it stops when it’s almost done and tells me that a ‘toplevel’ file ‘bacyeded’ is named twice. I can’t even find a file with that name on it….however. in my search where all the files and stuff is listed..I found that there is a ‘file’ that contains alsorts of fragments. It advises me not to open or tamper with them because it will cause damage to the drive…..BUT…question two is…how do I get all those fragments back to wherever they belong. I can’t defrag the D drive until all these problems are solved…and I’m trying desperately not to have to lose all the stuff that’s stored unless I absolutely have no other option.
          sigh.

In reply to my puter crashed..HELP

How old is the system? What are the physical sizes of the hard drives?

If you can get hold of a virus scan boot disk, you should scan the system for viruses. I believe you can get one at Mcafee’s web site.

It almost sounds like you have a stealth boot virus or one of similar boot viruses that replaces the master boot record.

        I had the system upgraded last year…I have two hard drives…C: and D:…separate. 3.2 and 2.3g really tiny I know..I wanted more…but…moola.
I found an antivirus and downloaded it.
there are no viruses in thepc. Checked it twice.

L H : it sounds like what i got on my older unit. when i energise the unit i have 2 hard drives, i wait to hear both whirr. if they both dont. i turn off the unit and whack the side of the unit and turn it on. then it works! the other thing is whathappens on my blind friends unit when hosed… i start up the unit with a rescue disk (floppy) in MS-DOS mode then do this: put in the win-98 disk in the cd-rom drive add a letter [d is (now) e] type in < tools\reskit > then the command < pcrestor > let win 98 re instal and you should be good til the next disaster….

When in safe mode can you get to the internet? If so go to ether mcafee’s or symantic’s web site. They have free on line virus scanning. When you start your computer do you log in or just start using it? Did you scandisk the c drive? M.E. will let you pick up to 5 diffrent dates to boot to pick the oldest and try a second time to boot up.

      back-up every important file first . . .

In reply to my puter crashed..HELP

Do you know how to manipulate through dos and copy files? I hate to ask you a stupid question already knowing your response, but you might have a technical friend that can. I suggest getting your files copied from one hard drive to the other firstbefore you do anything to destroy the other drive(move them back and forth to keep the files safe), or copy them to a CD-R if possible. If you can get onto the net, I’d suggest mailing them to yourself to keep them safe from annihalation(unless that’s too big of a security risk).
But the best thing to do would be to get MSN Messenger with Remote Desktop Sharing, then have one of your technical friends connect directly to your computer and move the files for you. If you need help, you can e-mail me at nemos1969@hotmail.com (send 2 e-mails, I erase a lot of junk mail). This option is of course only if you can access the internet.
The last option I would suggest is contacting a computer distributer to find a data recovery company. Yes, they do have them. They will pull your hard drive out of the tower, back-up the files on their computer, re-format or replace your hard drive, get your computer working, then re-install your files. This is also counting on the fact that you can afford to spend some money, and still do not have a security risk).

Good luck, and PLEASE let me know how your doing with it. Also feel free to contact me for other questions you might have(I don’t know all the answers-that’s why I have a lot of books). Good Luck.

If you need more help . . .

        by nemos ·

In reply to back-up every important file first . . .

If you need major assistance, and can’t afford the recovery services(and trust me), you can contact me, and then send me your hard drives, and I can extract the files for you, and attempt to repair your hard drives for you (just the hard drives)- through the US Postal Service. And no, I won’t charge you, but return postage fees would be nice 🙂

Take the drive to somebody you know and install it as slave in his or her computer; see if it works and if you can read the drive, start from there with backup and troubleshooting. Do you notice any kind of noise coming from your drive or drives, can you feel anything when you put your finger on the physical drive, like something is doing something inside the drive, light vibrations or anything? As a computer technician I advise you GET OUT of Win ME as soon as possible. That is a Piece of Microsoft S?!
      Good luck.

        Getting out of Win ME???

        by _ladyhawk_2 ·

In reply to my puter crashed..HELP

        Hi Feb:
All I can tell you about noises was .. you know…it’s been so much stuff happening concerning the attempts to fix this thing, that I can’t even remember the sequenses of events any more.
        sigh.
but…I’ll tell you…concerning win me. I never wanted that system installed…All I wanted was win 98. my pc isn’t advanced enough to handle all the new stuff in any of the other OS. I have a p2 with everything installed in in it back in 1998 March.
bought it in Kitchener Ontario from AshteQ…a company based out of Toronto.
They basically put the pc together and we took it home thinking we were getting a huge deal…LMFO….pathetic.
anyway…everything except the 160mg sdram is dated 1998. the sdram is summer 2000.
        I definitelyneed a new powerful pc. P4 with 256 mg RDRam…huge graphics card…80g HD.
you know…a monster. LMFO…I need one for graphics…I want to get into 3D …
        thanx for your comments.
        Liz

I want to thank all the people who responded to my distress call!!!!
It has been decided that my problem is a lost cause. The material that was lost is indeed lost..never to be seen again. sigh.
So I have to move on and make the best of a bad situation.
Thank you all again for your suggestions and for taking the time out of your busy schedules to send me your suggestions.
          You are very much appreciated.
          thanx again.
