when I start up the computer I can hear the startup sound. also the volume control on the taskbar is gone

I know around I had problems with zonealarm & clamwin went into task manager - processes and shut down clamwim because he took a lot off memery usage and so was zonalarm "vsmon" which was a huge problem it took me 5 minutes to open a window or answer on msn.

so any advice, what I should do please...

sound in not working

Do you remember what you were doing when the sound stop working?

Could you open the run window, type devmgmt.msc and tell me what you see? if you see any exclamation mark on the audio device then you need to reinstall the audio drivers.

I tried to fix this problem on my moms computer.

After i installed XPSP2 on her computer bam! no sound at all. the sound device was greyed out in control panel. but there were no issues in the device manager. i even tried a brand new sound card. i never did find a fix. just backed up and started from scratch.

Good luck

Sounds very much like...

...your sound mixer has gone belly-up! This happens with great regularity in XP and 2000 and sometimes a restart sorts this out. You want to find out from the Event Viewer if there are any errors and that should point to the right direction (Start, Run, Eventvwr.exe).
Or, you may want to try a removal from the device mangler...I mean, device manager! Just right-click the device and uninstall. Then go to the root of DM and right-click and Scan for New Hardware Changes... A reboot then should solve your problems. If everything fails, remove then re-install your sound card drivers after downloading direct from the manufacturer.

You may like to try this

Open the Control Panel by left Clicking on Start, Control Panel then Classic View if it isn't already in Classic view and finally Sound & Audio Devices.

When the next window opens left click on the Audio Tab and make sure that your Sound Device is listed in the box. If it isn't left click on the down arrow on the right hand side of the box and select your Sound Device then apply and OK and return to the control Panel and see if you can change the volume and hear a warning sound. If you can try playing something and see if you can hear it now.

Quite often with XP this Device can be changed to something else particularly if there are games involved though some other programs do affect this setting. You should be OK to return this setting to your Audio Card without problems.
