My spare laptop.

By colin.hempsey ·
Here's a question for you all,

I have an old laptop which I am thinking about adding to my network to work as a print server. I would also like to use this machine for some media work such as changing movie formats from mov to mpeg etc.

Currently the machine has no OS on it, I have the original XP disk so I could install that but I also would like to see if a flavour of linux could do the job as then I could use FOSS for the media work that I wish to do.

Would a linux machine be able to do this on my network or should I just install XP?

Laptop Print Server

by john3347 In reply to My spare laptop.

I have an old laptop with 6 Gb hard drive and 192 Mb maximum memory that does a beautiful job as a wireless print server. It even has enough battery life that it will stand a two or three minute power failure without having to be restarted. It is tucked away under the coffee table and just prints from anywhere in the house. I don't know about any of the linux OS's, but it is a fabulous way to keep an otherwise out of date machine productive with Windows XP.
