My usb ports have disappeared

By kathi.burrell ·
Hi,

Hope someone can help.
I have a HP compacq small form desk top computer and use Windows XP pro.
I have had to run the HP recovery programme a few months ago and lost a lot of files despite checking the option to save files.

The usb ports have been working after this but for a few weeks they have temperamental. Now they have stopped working altogether.
I have checked the device manager and there are no usb ports listed.

I have downloaded the driver updates on everything associated with my computer and system from HP website.
I have downloaded the chipset but cant see how to utilise this apart from trying to update the drivers in everything on device manager. None of the drivers have been updated as I get the 'no better software found' message.

Can anyone suggest how to get the motherboard to recognise the usb ports so i can use my printer etc?

Many thanks

Are there Unknown Devices shown in device Manager?

If so, these may be your USB controllers. Right-click on them and Scan for Hardware Changes. Or double-click on the Unknown, and try loading the driver from there. Pick the driver from the list if Windows doesn't find it. If that doesn't work, right-click the Unknown and click Remove. Reboot the system and see if anything changes.

If there is nothing in Device Manager, try the Add New Hardware Wizard in Control Panel. Again, if Windows does not detect it, try to manually install from the lists.

Unfortunately, the hardware itself may be failing, and you'll have to have it looked at.

GG is correct- you'll get more answers if you post this as a Question. :)

Good luck.
