My Vista machine won’t let me install programs from disks

by chrysippus . Updated 18 years, 3 months ago

Some time ago, my desktop (Pavilion a6030n), running Vista Home Premium as its native OS, stopped allowing me to install programs from disks. If I put a movie or audio CD or DVD in the drive, no problem. But if I put a program install disk in, the system either crashes or goes into some sort of endless loop — the window turns half-opaque, the computer never stops “thinking”, and I’m not able to stop it with task manager or shut down the system any way other than manually. The DVD-RW drive passes all the diagnostic checks, and I’ve checked all the connections. I think the problem first showed up after I did a (successful, sort of) install of WordPerfect Office X3, but the problem didn’t go away even after I uninstalled that program. Hours spent chatting with HP support hasn’t done the trick.

Any help anyone can offer would be deeply appreciated!
