My Win98 runs fine

By rbmooney ·
If my Win98 2nd edition runs fine why should I--or anyone else for that matter--consider buying Microsoft's ME edition? I simply boost my hardware memory and power when I want any improvements.

My Win98 runs fine

why; to help MS dominate the world.!!
ME is bad, it's more a hit or miss situation.
If you dont have the need to stay with win98se till they really force you too.
In the w2k issue would h\would have been surprices how many people would have dos and win95.
Basically you make the desicion , not MS.
Pass on winme and since you didn't upgrade yet even w2k. Winxp is already on the market so it doesn't make since to buy w2k any more.
Be aware that that w2k and winxp is based on NT so beside adding security to your homepc your adding also some application headaches (thay may only work as administrator and not under a normal user) and you have to update the apps too.
It's a bit of a long answer, but at least you are a bit prepared when swithing over to one of the new os's.

regards,

Leopold

It isn't fair for me to say this answer didn't help me but the options are limited as per Techrepublic's layout. Thanks for your good effort.

It is a matter of preference,or should I say when you buy a toy and you hear about an accessory that would make it even better.
Windows ME is basically a Bug fix with a new interface, that gave consumers hope that Micrsoft had finally fixed what was wrong with the 98x version for those that were haveing to many problems.
Purchasing Windows ME was like buying a used car without taking a test drive, only to find out that you were better off with the old one that needed a little tweaking.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

It is difficult to generalize, but SOULRIDER made three good points. Since they were made in the shortest space and I am a writer I went with SOULRIDER. That's my bias as a writer I suppose, because all the other answers were on-target and reinforcing and I thank those IT people for responding.

Previous 2 posts are pretty much same opinions and suggestions as mine. I don't usually upgrade until someting I want to add or upgrade won't run on the existing OS. At some point in time (2-3 years) that will occur unless you leave the Win 98 system as is to do what it does (and does well) and obtain a 2nd system to to 'new stuff'.

Unfortunately, SW / HDW companies must sell new products or upgrades/improvements to old products to continue to generate business. MS seem to like to give upgrades/improvements that aren't (Office 2k had more menu changes than enhancements, etc.).

It is likely that you can even skip Win XP and take whatever is after that (or + 1 more) and still have a legal upgrade to Win 98, but MS is doing some different licensing and such and may not support that after XP.

If you play games, may be a while before they run 'well' on NT platforms, even Win 2K and XP. At some point I would guess the Game SW houses will stop creating for Win 98 / ME as they will be too old, but ...

If the software you have meets your needs at this time, why change? The drive to "upgrade" that exists in the market is illogical - it makes sense to keep a system if you are happy that it is doing what you need/want it to do at that time. When youneed it to do more, then upgrade.

Unless you have the desire to work for free as a beta tester for Bill Gates, I would NEVER upgrade to a new Microsoft OS until its second release. The idea of screwing up a system that is currently running great makes me cringe. Don't do it!
