my window xp disappeared after system restore

By griffithgriffith2000 ·
I have been having trouble with my system restore not running lately but I found a window on my computer allowing me to make the amount of memory used by the system restore smaller.I did this and ran the system restore and it worked, but as this had taken me some weeks to find the system restore was of little use and after one or two changes not working I decided to undo the system restore. when my computer came back on I had only a blank screen.I can bring up task manager and find all my files through the new task but no window. restarting the computer did nothing, how do I get my windows back.

shell = explorer.exe

Sounds like explorer.exe is not launching as your shell, possibly due to missing or modified shell= registry entry. Check your registry for this, if missing or modified, make it read this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
shell = Explorer.exe

Open up the Task Manager / Select File / New Task (Run...), and type in "regedit" / OK.

Inside of Registry Editor, in the left pane, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Microsoft / Windows NT / Current Version / and highlight Winlogon.

With Winlogon highlighted, look in the right pane for "Shell" and inspect its value, it should read "explorer.exe". If it is blank or anything other than explorer.exe, double-click on Shell and enter "Explorer.exe" (without the quotes) and select OK.

Close Regedit and restart the computer.

Try Disk Defragmenter

by shellyflanders In reply to my window xp disappeared ...

I had the exact same problem and I checked my registry and it was correct. As a last resort, I defragged and it actually worked!

Here's what worked for me:
- Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter
- Defrag your C: drive
- It takes a while so watch some tv or something and hopefully when you come back it'll be done and you'll have a window that says your PC has been updated if you have auto-updates turned on like me. I was able to surf the web for the first time in months!

Good luck!
