My woes in IT

I have been in a real battle lately and I was just wondering if my fellow IT people have had or are experiencing my same woes. I work for a really good company, in that management does not micro-manage and we really have freedom with several aspects of our jobs. For me individually, I have become more and more frustrated in the lack of "Team" with the IT staff. We are small, only a few people. The largest frustration is that our manager seems to only concentrate on one person, and that one person seems to ensure that he is the only one who really gets the brunt of the important work. He is involved in what we do, but he ensures that we do not get involved in what he does. I really feel that management wants a more cohesive and well rounded team, but my efforts to gain more knowledge and be more involved seems to always get cut off. I get very confused in that many people complain that they have too much, yet my complaint is that I wish to have more.

Any thoughts on how a fellow IT guy can cope?

One idea is to look around

and see if you can think of a way to fill a gap, or improve upon something. Then bring the idea(s) to your manager.

Another idea is to ask your manager to assign the next project to you.

I've been in this situation and I'd advise you to start job hunting now

It seems as if your manager is playing the old favoritism game and most likely is looking to promote that one person that's getting the attention and keep you where you are or eventually make work so mundane that it will force you to leave. Don't make the same mistake I have in the past by thinking things will get better because if this is the current situation, it is only bound to get worst and you'll only become more stressed out and miserable. Start job hunting now and look for positions that will improve your career by offering challenging work and growth potential. If you do find something new, don't burn your bridges at your current job and simply state on your exit interview that you feel that you've outgrown the position there and need to move on to bigger and better things. Good luck and don't feel bad because we've all been there.

You know what....

I think you should be very careful before changing jobs. Here's why. A recession is coming.

What i suggest you do it this.

I don't know how your relationship is with your manager, but the first thing I think you should do is have a sitdown with him/her. Preferably outside the office, in neutral territory. Tell him how you feel, that you would like to have better projects, that you don't feel you are getting your fair share (be sure not to mention the other "lucky" person, don't turn this into a bitching session). Tell them what you want.

Then, observe what is happening and work on your resume as you do that. See where things are going, check if things are changing, staying the same or getting worst.

If things are not changing or are getting worst, at least you would of given management a fair warning about your intentions. Now you check to see if your position could be compremised by the coming economic situation. If no, then you may opt to tough it out until things get better. If you feel you can safely make a jump, then go for it.

When looking at new potential employers, check out their credentials. See how they're reacted to the last economic pressures we endured (hopefully they were already around back then, It was 8 years ago). Check out how they treat their employees from the employees themselves. Some employer can look good on paper, but once your part of the chain, things sour really quickly.

Finding a good employer, who pays well, who does not micromanage and gives you a good working environment are getting rare to find these days. You may find yourself looking for something better than what you have, and end up with less.

I, unfortunatly, am talking out of experience.

Thanks for the input

Thanks for the helpful advise. I have to say that I have gone to both ends of the spectrum. There are some days when I start to hit that Dice site and start that process, then there are other days when I admit that I have things pretty good. It is a challenging thing to feel that you have the ability and desire to become more of an asset to the company, yet sometimes think the opportunity is intentionally being held from you. Times are changing, and things in IT are not getting any easier. There was a recent article in Network World that said the concept of an IT team is going away and that IT people had better learn the ways of the web. I also have made a blunder in the past thinking the grass was greener on the other side, and it turned out to be weeds when the light shined. For me, I have to understand that smart choices sometimes are ones that include rationalization and patients.

Honestly, I have it ok, and yes I agree that my coworker will advance long before I will, but nothing is certain and for any IT person frustration may be a way of life.

Thank you counselors, I know this may not have been the what these forums intend, but sometimes a quick vent is a good topic.

Make yourself 'fireproof'

- Do your best work
- Become the only person who knows how to make something work
- keep your skills sharp and your cerfications current

If you've done all three of the above, and they don't appreciate you, go work somewhere else.

All too often you see IT people who are unhappy, BUT their attitude sucks and their skills are stale. This is a double-whammy. You want something better, but your job security is weak because your attitude is weak, and your only certification is in Netware 3.
