MYSQL question

By michbloch ·
I recently had issues with a web forum. After some serious hosting issues I got away with a copy of my sql database, but not an actual backup.

My question is, is there any way I can get to that data? I'm not strong in Unix, and run windows XP. Are there any applications I can use to access it long enough to get a backup?

Any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

same version of mysql or newer.
available free in a windows executable from

download, install and start the mysqld service
then, create a db in the mysql installation.
search the drive forlocation of the newly created db.

copy your site db into that location
connect to that db in mysql, you will need to use the same username and password as with the site.
if you have suceeded, then you only need to do a db dump, with full inserts. and you have the backup.

where did the mysql executables install?
there will not be anything in the windows start menu.
you'll have to use the command prompt to access mysql.

start>run cmd

cd c:\path\to\mysql\bin

where SOC>>> is start of console / dos prompt entries
<<<EOC is end of the commands

how much disk space does this sql file take up?
( if it's small enough to email I might be able to get the data for you with any of my installations. )
