Mysterious underlining in Word

By kweinhold ·
We are running Windows 95 on a Novell Network 4.11. In Word 97 we have had several occurances of documents being underlined (yes the entire document), however this does not show on the screen or in print preview. We have tried opening the documentfrom Exploring to renaming. Nothing seems to help.

Check Tools->Track Changes->Highlight Changes

See if Track Changes is on at all. See if Highlight changes on screen is on/off; also Highlight changes in printed document.

Click Options... for how Inserted, Deleted, Changed Formatting and Changed Lines are highlighted.

I think the default for inserted text is underlined, and that's what this sounds like.

If so, you have 2 options: turn off change highlighting; or, Tools->Track Changes->Accept or Reject Changes. Fortunately this last dialog has an Accept All button that will get you out of the mess in one more click!

Are the underlines only showing up on printing? It sounds like you aren't seeing the underline in the normal screen or in print preview. Is that correct?

If those statements are correct, you probably better check your printer driver, font used and your printer itself. Some fonts (and drivers) send unrecognized codes to the printer when used, usually resulting in underlines, funky bolding, etc. If you have a current printer (such as a LaserJet 4050), try an older driver. You may also want to turn off bidirectional printing, and switch it to RAW.

One final possibility that is mighty remote is a poor quality printer cable.

Good luck!

I would agree with answer 2 in that it could be the printer driver problem. If it had occured suddenly with no applications/ program installed or deleted, then it would be the physical problem. Check the port and cables.
