Mystery Emails

By mckay_w ·
I have been recieving emails from the address 'postmaster@hotmail.com' informing me that an email i tried to send could not be sent. The problem is that i never sent the email in question.
Also, when i try to contact the email address that it saysi tried to send an email to, i find out that the address does not even exist.
I frequently get these messages. and it is not a security issue, as i have changed my password regularly.

Have you checked your system for virus? and if so, did you update the DAT files before preforming the virus scan?

sounds like a virus. some viruses use "spoofing", so the virus might not be on your machine. rather, if you are listed in someone's address book, it will randomly generate an email, grabbing your name as the sender, and someone else's from same book as the recipient. klez behaves this way, as do others. you can block a particular sender e.g., "postmaster@hotmail" on the server from being able to connect to your mail server to begin with -- they will get a reject notice. another thing you could do is change your email address (if that is practical). last thing is to make sure your mail server isn't being used as an open relay.
