Hi all,
(*Remember* as you read this that I have my machine fully updated by MS’s patches and updates, and have repeatedly virus-scanned my machine with both Norton and Panda antivirus Platinum (DAT signature files updated daily, and scanned my machine with the most recent Ad-Aware…)
Since I recently restored a notebook using original Gateway factory W2K and drivers CDs etc etc, I occasionally notice a strange, suspicious file appear in the root of C:.
It is simply a file labeled “~”(no quotes). I never have seen this file before…
When I look at it in a text file editor, I note that my entire Outlook Express 6 Address Book contents is in this file. Several entries are blocked together, and each block is separated by a lot of blank character space. Hmmm… I smell invasion…
As I mentioned though, I have patched, updated, virus-scanned and bogey-man-scanned the bejesus out of this machine! Nothing turns up suspicious!!!
Is this “~” file in the root of C: a normal thing, or should I still be suspicious?
I have permanently deleted the file numerous times, only for it to return again and again! It does not return when I boot up, start nor use Outlook Express 6. It just seems to put itself on my C: drive’s root at any ol’ time it pleases! I can’t see a pattern as to when or what causes it to appear.
No one else (on my email address book list) has complained about virus problems… But I’m still quite concerned…
Any ideas here??? Thanksin advance!
Doug
