Mystery freezing XP

by plexor . Updated 18 years, 4 months ago

Greetings from Downunder!
I have not one but two PC’s with almost identical problems.
THey are generics from a reputable supplier but evince the same behaviour:
1. Will sometimes start ok if not switched off o/nite. (Not powered down – disconnected).
2. Maybe one power supply – but two at once? One a year younger.

3. VERY old techies will remember the 80’s trick of using a hair dryer to “goose” a weak power supply. In both cases seems to work – most times.
However, every couple of times, the Monitor (19″LCD) simply sits there blinking…. 4-5 reboots later will fire up and run for several hours then freeze.

I have switched vid cards, monitors, drives, changed batteries, to no real effect.

Both Systems run XPSP2 , 1meg Ram, Athlon 2000+,

Need another logical test to run….
Could it still be Power supplies?
