DARPA currently has a number of information technology projects that will take computing to a Star Trek like level. Most of these projects are ongoing in Universities and some in private industry. These project include:
Ubiquituos computing: Information technology everywhere we go.
Network 21: Human centric computing.
Oxygen: Artificial Intelligence systems. Nueral Nets.
Vision 2020: Network centric warfare.
The list goes on. I remember 20+ years ago looking at an old 1 MB harddrive with a 1/4 hp washing machine motor, radial belts from an auto engine and platters the size of a frisbee and then comparing that to the 10MB MFM shoebox sized harddrive in my Tandy 1000HD. Today I can hold a 30GB drive in less than my palm.
