Name resolution issues on local xp network

by jeffedit . Updated 18 years, 4 months ago

I have a small home network with 4 xpSP2 machines. All part of “workgroup” and each with a unique machine name. 3 of the 4 workstations work fine sharing with each other but I’m trying to troubleshoot connection issues on my laptop which doesn’t seem to resolve names on the network. I can ping the ip’s, but I can’t ping the machine names. The other workstations ping no problem including seeing the laptop. I have tried both the internal nic and a wireless card. I have tried with and without nwlink netbios/ipx protocols, which seemed to help in the past. I tried static and dynamic ip. I tried safe mode to bypass firewalls and compared the services to the other machines to be the same.
Network is Actiontec DSL router going to 1 GB switches. Router is providing ip’s. Laptop gets on internet no problem. Without nwlink protocol, if I try to look at all computers on the network, I get an error that the network isn’t accessible etc etc. Any ideas appreciated.
