I am running a W2000 server with a network of 5 W98SE desktops. Nothing complicated, running DHCP & DNS with standard settings. Want to share single modem Internet access. Can?t use ICS as wont run on domain server & consensus seems to be that NAT is more robust.
Following instructions from Microsoft, Tech Republic & various other articles I used the wizard to configure Routing & Remote Access. Selected Internet Connection Server, NAT, & selected my server?s NIC as the internal interface & my Dial Up connection as the external. At this point followed the wizard to make this a Demand-dial interface.
So far so good. In properties of NAT/address assignment I ensured the check box was cleared so that the system should use server DHCP not the?DHCP-light? that?s part of NAT ? this ?cos I don?t want to touch the domain?s DHCP.
Similarly I left the check box in the Name Resolution tab of NAT properties clear as want to use DNS proper.
Result: At the server I get Demand-Dial internet connectivity, at the desktops I get ignored.
From the desktops I can ping the Local Area Connection interface (10.10.1.1) & the internal gateway (10.0.0.18) but I can?t ping the external (Demand dial) interface (e.g. 203.166.0.xxx served by the ISP)
The server is handing out the 10.0.0.x IP set which I believe is one of the permitted sets? From what I can gather I don?t HAVE to have the 192.168.0.x scope in DHCP?
IPconfig on the desktops shows
Host Info: DNS servers 10.10.1.1
Ethernet Adapter Info: IP address 10.0.0.x, Subnet 255.0.0.0 Default gateway BLANK, DHCP server 10.10.1.1, & both WINS servers BLANK. I think I need to configure the desktops to have a Default Gateway IP of the internal gateway (10.0.0.18)? I?ve tried on 2 workstations to add this but winipcfg shows no Default gateway.
Many thanks in advance, I?ve missed something I guess??
