National ISP that plays nice

By McKayTech ·
I need to find a dialup ISP to support two purposes. First of all, to provide local points of access when I'm traveling nationwide and second, I would like the same account to also serve as a backup to my regular Internet connection.

Both AOL and Compuserve are out of the question because of their obnoxious and dysfunctional AOL Adapter that is not supported by the router that will establishing the dialup connection when the primary line drops. I also understand from them that the support life on their Compuserve Classic product is expiring so that is not an option either.

Any ideas? I haven't tried MSN and don't know who else is out there with all the ISP births, deaths and mergers.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

paul

I appreciate the recommendation - however, in view of the note below, I'm a little worried about PSInet. I just got done resolving major headaches that started when PSN.NET went out of business without notice and stranded my Web site and my DNS records.

But I appreciate your input regardless!

I have used Earthlink in various states in the US without any problem whatsoever. They also have a multitude of local phone numbers in every state that I've visited.

I hate to tell you ktarpley, but PSINet may not be around much longer. I work next door to their site in VA (Our company also uses their service). My understanding is that they may have to shut down due to fianacial problems.
I would recommend Earthlink as well. Since they got bought up by Sprint, their local line access have greatly increased.

I appreciate the information. I just got badly burned by an ISP failure and would rather not repeat the experience. Earthlink seems like a good choice at the moment and I appreciate your recommendation.

regards!
