AOL mail never leaves the AOL servers... thus you do not need to protect them. You read/answer/delete them online.... they're not on your computer.

If you take an AOL message and copy/paste it to a MS Word or any other application, NAV should find any virus when you save the file.

You should also do a NAV complete scan from time to time.

And you should do a individual file scan on anything you download from the internet to your hard disk drive before running it or reading it.

Norton AntiVirus does not configure email protection for AOL. It only supports programs that use POP3 and SMTP communications protocols.
How does one configure AOL manually?

Norton AntiVirus requires you to change settings.
Ex:
Setting Name
l. Incoming POP3 Server
2. User name
3. Outgoing SMTP Server

Current Settings
(example)
l. mail.ispname.com
2. userid
3. userid/mail.ispname.com

New Settings
(Based on Example)
1. 127.0.0.1
2. userid/mail.ispname.com
3. mail.ispname.com

Where are the settings?

That was Norton AntiVirus 2000. I now have NAV2002 installed on my computer.

The settings you listed may be found in your email client, such as Outlook or Outlook Express. I suspect that there may have been some miscommunication between you and AOL.
