    navlu32.exe (NAV5 Live update) locking m

    Locked

    Hi,

We recently pushed via login script executed package a Norton 5.0 installation to apx 3000 machines. Our servers are NT 4 and our clients are NT4 with a few (maybe 200) Windows 95 boxes. After the 95 installations, some of the users are seeing a failure in navlu32.exe on startup during the login script. This is a file associated with Live update. We are unable to clean this error up with a manual uninstall and reinstall. It sometimes has no effects on the machine, but sometimes will lock it up completely. Remember, our NT boxes have no problems. I send it here before calling Norton. I have set files=200 and device=c:\windows\himem.sys in config.sys for these boxes with no luck.

Uninstalling Norton Antivirus doesn’t uninstall LiveUpdate – I think probably because LiveUpdate can be used to update programs other than NAV. I’m not sure what the “proper” way to uninstall Live Update is – maybe you’d better check with Norton. One way you could try would be to uninstall NAV, then edit the registry and find all entries for Norton or Symantec and delete them – obviously be sure to back up your registry first and have offline copies so that you can restore it if necessary. Also, since it’s 95, be sure you check the win.ini and system.ini for any related entries and remove them, too. Then reboot and try reinstalling. Hope this helps

Unless I misunderstood something here, is there a reason this can’t be launched from the start menu instead of the login batch? It sounds like something is just maxing the network connection and norton is just adding to the congestion.

As an alternative, we never use navlu32, which can cause an internet connection bottleneck, instead I automatically download the dat files from Norton to a central server and the clients get their updates from there, running nav32up in the login script..This is the best way to have the clients automatically updated.

I wouldn’t suggest putting this in their own startup since the smarter ones tend to delete these things…BUt I would suggest that in your logon script, you point to the live updates on THEIR PCs..

Ok. All your comments are good, but I didnt clarify enough. We dont use live update, however, it is installed automatically with Norton. We push dat updates through the login script when needed. As far as the uninstall issue with Live update, I’ll ask norton about that. Thanks.
