NDIS error in Windows 98 Second Edition

By casubramanyam ·
Hi!!

This is subramanyam. I have a question. Please spare sometime as I would like to describe my problem in detail with also the steps which I tried to resolve them. Thank you for ur patience.

I have tried installing Windows 98 second edition on my computer....which comes with Intel 845 chipset motherboard with audio, lan, usb,ps/2mouse and keyboard on board.I have benq CD writer. As it is known that the Windows 98 second edition will restart after the installation, the computer restarts and stalls at a point with an error "NDIS failed: while intializing".

I have found that there are two files in my computer in C:\windows\system directory with nDis.vxd and nDis2sUP.vxd file. I have tried renaming it and also tried creating blank files with those names. However, the operating system points out that the specific ndis files are missing. But it still manages to load the windows. sometimes it does not load...just restarts the computer. somehow I have managed to load the windows 98 and installed windows xp professional successfully with no problems. Now i have windows xp prof running well in my computer..but everytime i try to load windows 98...windows 98 second edition does not load. once i got a chance to load windows 98 second edition and try to reinstall it(remember that windows xp has been installed).I have tried reinstalling the windows 98 from windows 98 only by running the windows 98 setup file from the dump of the hard disk in E: drive. Now, the reinstallation never finishes.

Sorry for such a big description. But thats what I am upto with my operating system in my computer. I believe that someone would be able to help me out with the problem.

Thank you very much!!!

With regards,

Subramanyam.C.A.

I've discovered one more way in which Win98 conflicts with newer hardware. If you have a processor that runs faster than 2.1 GHz, and if you need to load ndis.vxd (a network virtual device driver), Win98 will not load (except in safe mode). You can do a step by step confirmation, and say "no" to ndis.vxd, but then your network hardware drivers will not load. Microsoft has a "hot fix" for this problem, though, and so far it has worked for me. Check the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 312108, and good luck!

You can download the file that you need to fix the problem here:
