NDIS.SYS Blue Screen

I have a customer who is getting a blue screen of death – driver_irql_not_less_or_equal ndis.sys when they are connected over PPPoE to their DSL provider using speedstream software. When, in turn, they use their cisco vpn dialer back into my network, a blue screen will eventually appear sometime during the connection. The drivers and software are all up to date. The user is on an IBM laptop with a 3com pcmcia nic. Drivers are current. I have never seen this and am somewhat lost.
