NDS problems

By Alienrasta ·
I am having problems with users not being able to get drive mappings when login to the network. They are all part of the same context and have the same rights and login scripts at the container level. This problem does not occur to all users in thatdepartment, but to a few and never the same ones, random. The other problem I have encountered is that some workstations cannot find the tree. You can see the tree from the login screen, but you cannot access a context. Error message posts indicating "cannot find tree".
We are running Netware 5, using DHCP, Windows NT4 workstations.
We have 4 NDS servers and 2 production servers. Problem comes from one of the production servers only.
I need to know any possible solutions to this issue.

Some parts of this sound like a licensing issue. Check for any licensing errors or turn NLSTRACE on and look for errors.

Don't understand your distinction between the NDS servers and the Production servers.

Could also be a protocol issue. Check to see that IP and/or IPX are properly bound on that server. Also, if you are running IP only, confirm that you have adequate IP addresses in the DHCP pool to handle all the stations.

Have already been there and done that. Unfortunately, the problem is more complex than that. If there is any more information you need, please let me know. I can offer more points depending on the type of help. Thanks!

What service packs have you installed on your NetWare 5? Is this NetWare 5.0 or 5.1? What version of Novell Clients do you have on those NT workstations?

Are you using both IPX and IP to make your connections to all the servers? Are they all binded properly? When you mention 4 NDS servers, I am assuming you're talking about Netware 4.x and 5.x servers and the 2 production servers are WinNT servers, am I correct?

A big reason why some workstations cannot find the tree is that the directory agent (slpda.nlm) is not running on the server. Load slpda at the end of your login script and this problem should go away. Another thing is to make sure that all your servers are communicating within replica rings (DSREPAIR - A). Servers not communicating or replicating can hold up authentication when replicas that need updating contain user information are stuck. Use dsrepair to make sure that is occurring..

If you are running Mcafee Virus Scan 4.x, it can and will interfere with Novell Client and network connectivity (i.e. Drive letters disappearing, improper shutdowns, etc.). Although, there is a patch for 4.x, your best bet is to upgrade to 5.x or drop Mcafee altogether, it has too many problems. I recommend CA's Incoculate IT 5.1.

We are running Netware 5 and no anti-virus on the servers.
