Ne w bug / Virus???

By mike ·
I serviced a Windows XP Pro Machine today that had a file called "iak.exe" in the start up menu. I could find no reference to this file on the internet. I deleted all references to the file that I could fine and rebooted only to find that it was back. Did this again in safe mode, same thing. Also when loaded if you move your cursor over the Norton 2002 system tray icon the icon disappears, same with Zone alarm. If you try to restart either program they will not run. This is scary! Anybody have any information on this?

Offshoot of.....

by cglrcng In reply to Ne w bug / Virus???

It is an offshoot of this program (see below**), it was renamed automatically due to an attempted removal. Someone, (possibly a loved one? of the user has installed the program to do a little watching?).

I once found the same on a clients machineand was faced w/ a dillemma. I handled it well, selective start up, disabled the program, it re-named the same way. So I put it back into normal startup and notified that a re-format of the drive would be necessary to delete the program. He requested the full scrub. The program reappeared after 2 months, but we had installed a process viewer, and the culprit (his wife) was caught dead in the lights of that oncoming truck. A loss of trust is a dangerous thing. The cure was a freeware "Win Lock" program, no unknown program installs since.

Further info on startup's (Full List)

Try this list.

Remove all spaces in the URL, leave the hyphen after pacs. Good luck! It's a fine line dealing w/ a domestic issue, and these usually are.
