Need APIPA to work

By yechenglin ·
My tablet notebook had a mapped network drive to a shared folder on c: drive, so I need a IP address for this to work. When no DHCP server is present, I can't get a IP address.
Automatic Private IP addressing doesn't work on this Gateway notebook. I tried adding a RegDWord of 1 for IPAutoconfigurationEnabled in Registry, tried assigning Alternative IP configuration(with static IP), and finally assigning a static ip. None of this works. IPConfig just reports Media Disconnected, Which of course is true, because I disconned the cable and disable the wireless to simulate the condition I will have on the road. When I first encounter this problem, I used DisableDHCPMediaSense so the computer will remember the last IP address it used, and my network driv works. But this creates problems where I can't connect to Wireless networks in hotels etc. Any suggestions on how to get a IP address without DHCP?

Ok the question is very confusing. If you set an IP address on your machines that are on the same network and you dont have Windows firewall turned on(or at least allow file sharing) then join them to the same workgroup. Then you will see each other. Both have wireless?? Do you have an Access point? Like wireless router?

why are you sharing the the folder?

this is important. is it because you want easy access to it from "my computer"?

or are you sharing it because you need to access that from another computer when you are at your "home network"
