Need Fileserver with Fast Interface

By kimscomputing ·
Have computer that needs fast interface to rack of hard drives(ide) - audio based needs highspeed. Is a gigabit network the fastest way to connect the drives. How does the speed compare to fiberoptic and the speed the drives run direct from the computer. Both computers are Macs G4 and G5. - running Protools.

If memory servers me correctly fiber channel is twice as fast as gigabit. But if the client computers are not running gigabit then your bottle neck is the client computers. Using gigabit should work.

If data I/O is the goal then SCSI is the only way to go. You can setup a PC with as many SCSI channels and drives needed, all running Ultra 320 15K drives and connect with GB ethernet. or wait for SAS (serial attached SCSI) this will be 640 mbps burst. You can also use Linux if you have an aversion to MS.
