Need good backup software for small business.

By mkotzev ·
I am looking for a powerful Backup server which can manage backup for a mixed OSX/Win office environment. We currently use EMC Retrospect but it has some shortcomings, mainly that it cannot backup Open files (i.e. PST outlook files while outlook is open), and does not work very well for storage mediums over a network. Does anyone know good software which allows centralized management with zero client interaction, supports both Windows and OSX, and supports Open File Protection?

Backup Exec

Backup Exec is what you want. It's cross platform, the user never sees anything, and it has open file protection.

Don't be put off by the fact that it's owned by Syamntec, they just recently bought it and it's still an awesome product.

platform + backup software

by apotheon In reply to Need good backup software ...

If you want it centralized, you want a backup server. Period.

The best platform I've used for a backup server -- the easiest to manage, among the cheapest to set up, the most reliable, et cetera -- is FreeBSD.

On FreeBSD, the specific software I'd suggest depends on your specific needs -- but the two I'd be most likely to recommend are rsync and dump. In each case, a trifling bit of scripting, plus OpenSSH for securely and reliably shuttling data across the network, can turn a simple utility into an excellent server-based backup system.

I provided some general backup strategy advice to someone else here not long ago. Have a look.
