Thing is, nobody wants to spend money on this. I was hoping to get some contacts/referrals.

Maybe thats why…

…you aren’t finding the right people. You have to spend money to find people.
You can try calling the local schools that offer tech courses, they are often eager to place people.

IT professionals are not janitors or gardeners..so spend the money

You have to pay accordingly if you want candidates worth their salt, and as other have said, you have to be willing to pay recruiters to find you suitable candidates.

If nobody’s willing to pay for a newspaper ad or web posting, it doesn’t speak well for the chances of receiving competitive pay.

Will the new hire need to bring his own PC?

pens?
Pencils?
Post it notes?just what are they willing to pay for if they’re not even willing to pay for an ad?

Perhaps they should look in the welfare office for a tech

because one has to be really desperate to work for a company that is too cheap to post an advertisement online or in the paper. That says volumes about their view of what IT is. I’ll say it again, IT is no different than medicine or law. It’s a professional field and should be treated as such. We are not blue collar truck drivers or plumbers.

An ad in the local paper will cost at least five bucks! This is not something to be done lightly, and if you go and spend all the companies money willy nilly, it is the same as if you never made it in the first place!
The key, any “organization” looking for help desk that can’t find it, is paying dirt wages. A single FREE call to a local college campus would have a half dozen kids by the end of the week.

Since I said the same thing earlier…
My current employer called an outplacement firm – the ones that companies who do layoffs hire to help the laid off staff with their job hunt, resumes etc.
Didn’t cost a penny, and they found a whole raft of people who were qualified.
But I interviewed better than the rest.:)
I also look at the listings at the job hunting club I used to be a member of back then. Always people there who want to work.

THANKS FOR THE PROFESSIONALISM
by michele.field · about 18 years, 1 month ago
In reply to Keep cost to minimum
I assumed I was dealing with a group of “above the board” professionals who knew or understood the value of gaining referrals through a professional network of peers. That is all I was attempting to do.
I have posted this on Monster, CB and Dice and got ZILCH…at least nothing I would hire into my group.
Which is why I wanted to test the theology behind what I attempted to do here. Thanks for disproving that theory.

What kind of responses were you expecting?
by big ole jack · about 18 years, 1 month ago
In reply to THANKS FOR THE PROFESSIONALISM
You perfectly spelled it out that your organization is cheap and isn’t willing to spend a few bucks to find a professional. That right there speaks volumes about how IT is viewed where you work, and you expect to fill this position?
Typical HR puppet you are. We are dedicated to this profession and won’t sell it out under no circumstances to corporations who undervalue what we do.

You walked in here with what was essentially a huge “kick me” sign on your back. On other sites, you would have been shredded mercilessly. On one site I know of, you’d likely have been hacked.
You may not realize this, but you made a major faux-pas. Some folks in here were clearly insulted, others, such as myself, tweaked your nose a bit.
I did, however, give a serious answer below.

Peer referrals.
by charliespencer · about 18 years, 1 month ago
In reply to THANKS FOR THE PROFESSIONALISM
“…the value of gaining referrals through a professional network of peers.”
Referrals work two ways. You apparently expected us to refer potential employees to you. However, doing so also carries an obligation to our peers. I could not recommend a peer apply to a company that won’t place a newspaper classified because of the cost. As others have noted, that implies much about the value the company places on this position and on IT in general.
Sorry if you got your feelings hurt.

I did post MULTIPLE ads that cost plenty of money….I purchased a $795/month subscription to Dice.com, plus Monster and CareerBuilder ads ALREADY…
I am also more than willing to be an active participant in the referral relationship….although I havent really seen any of you attempt to participate yet…just insults, degradation, etc…. -

Yes, there are NO above the board professionals here. Not a one.
Just a suggestion here, if you want answers or help, there is this saying about catching more flies with honey. It’s actually fairly accurate.
When you open up a discussion, you have to consider that you aren’t always going to hear what you want to hear. Perhaps you should check the thickness of your skin?

But your reply shows me I have little reason to be.
Yes I think some people here over-reacted, and overlooked the fact that you had already posted on DICE and other places, which I know are not anywhere near free.
But instead of politely pointing that out, you lashed out.
You just insulted me for being non professional when I did try to help. Boy thats professional, and highly motivating.

She said she nobody wants to spend money not that she hasn’t.
Further, I agree with this statement. I have had to sort through the tons of applications and resumes received from Paper and Online listings. It was a mess and I will not do it again for an entry level position. It was a waste of money. I ether got people who did not have any experience or people that had too much. The hardest thing to do is to get someone to be a Bob. I have some local professional groups I would post positions and I would post at local colleges.
She posted the job description here. I thought it was a good idea. I have young ones ask me all the time here about jobs. If I lived in Dallas I would have thrown three her way.
Further, how many times have we seen the HELP how do I get started thread?
That said, I understand the feeling that IT professionals are being undervalued.

My state has something called “The professional services group” which is funded by the state’s unemployment office.
Groups like these are great because you know that the folks aren’t just fishing, they want to work.
They’re also obviously not the type to take adversity lying down.
These groups also don’t charge employers.

And she did post the job here.
Unfortunately, this topic is generating more interest than the actual job description. Unless she “bumps” it, it’s going to fall out the bottom of the list before the end of the day.

That’s why I’m in IT and “you’re” in HR. I have better communication skills than you…both verbal and written. I have to in order to explain what it is I do to salary lowballing dolts in HR so that I can justify why I command the salary I do.
