Need guidance to lead a Security Team

By ed.chee ·
I'm leading the Security Team. Learning to be a consultant. I have done a lot of research but lack of hands on experience especially in giving advise of Secured Network Design in deploying Security Devices. How should I start to learn to be at leastto know the basics? What methodology does Security Consultant employ from A - Z? Should he specialize in just few things like firewall, Anti Virus, IDS, Policies, Platforms, etc? Any web link that gives good info? Please help!!

Well to help you know, i would do a lot of reading on security related issues.. NT security, network security, Lan/wan security and software security.. here is a list of brief sits to help you on your journey.

this will keep you occupied for a while.. keep in mind i hope you have a general backround on NT systems and NT archictecture if not your in for a hard ride.

I'm sorry to say that if you are the Security Team Lead, and you don't know the basics of Information Systems Security, you are in WAY over your head. You really need to find some other line of work before your reputation gets thoroughly trashed.
You DON'T choose to become a consultant and then decide to learn the subject you want to consult on. The idea is that you beome a consultant in an area in which you have expertise.

There several shelves of books on the various aspects of Information Systems Security at the local bookstore. While this forum is a great place to get help on a specific subject or with a specific problem, it is not the proper place to ask "Teach me everything I need to know to become an expert!"

Sorry for preaching.

How you got this job, I don't even want to know. Unless you have unlimited time to do ALOT of research, I highly suggest you fess up about your lack of experience, at minimum to your team. Personally, I wouldn't even try to play it off, as you are only going to dammage your reputation with your team and your clients.
That being said, these two are where I would start:

Good luck, you're going to need it.
