Need help in fixing sound please!

By vogel2004 ·
Hi. Ive really tried reading in every forum online Ive found how to fix my problem, but none of them applied to my case so Im sorry to finally be bothering people about it.

The thing is that I bought this used Fujitsu Siemens desktop some weeks ago with Windows 2000 in it, however when I upgraded it to Windows XP Home, sound stopped working at all. I know my speakers work, however no sound comes out from them when I plugged them to my computer. I dont really know much about drivers or codecs, so I wouldnt know what else to specificate, but I would really appreciate someone could help me on this one, since Im here in a new country and with no music. tragedy tragedy hehe.
Thanks!

Locating information and downloading drivers

by NickNielsen In reply to Need help in fixing sound ...

You can find information about your sound drivers by right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties, going to the Hardware tab, and clicking on Device Manager. Click on the plus ( + ) sign next to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. Locate the entry for your sound card.
1. Double click on the entry to open the Properties window. The Device Status Window will tell you what is going on with your sound card.
2. If there is no entry for your sound card, look under Unsupported Devices. Your sound card will probably be there.

This web site (http://tinyurl.com/84ugu) will have the drivers for your sound card.

audio devices

by vogel2004 In reply to Locating information and ...

Hey Nick, thanks a lot for that quick reply. Im not quite sure what my driver is, what I get when I check for my sound controllers is this:

What is it that I have to download? And download it where for it to work?
More info on it is that when I go to Control Panel's audio devices, it says there is no audio device, and that when I try to play a song on Windows Media Player it says: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."
Many thanks!

More info

by vogel2004 In reply to One more thing

More things Ive been able to know from my computer are:

Sound card: VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (AC'97 codec: Avance Logic/RealTek ALC650)

Computer brand name: VIA Technologies, Inc. AK39
Motherboard model: Shuttle AK39/N / SK43G (FX43)
Motherboard chipset: VIA VT8377 KT400 + VT8233CF/VT8235

Is that enough to know the necessary things to download for the sound to work? Thank you very much anyway!

If you need further information

by NickNielsen In reply to More info

Click on the link in zlito's post.

Select the second line (VIA AC97 codecs incorporated into VT8233, VT8233A, VT8233C, VT8235 and VT8237/R South Bridges) in the selection box.

Installation instructions are below the download link. Extract the data, run Setup, and restart. You should be good to go. Let us know how it goes.
