need help making RealPlayer work again

By JADavis9 ·
Not sure what I did, but I seem to have messed up RealPlayer and it will no longer play .mov movies shot on my camera and downloaded to my pc. It will play the samples found on the RealPlayer site. Maybe it is a firewall thing. I use Microsoft Security Essentials on this home WindowsXP tablet. I am new to this technology and could really use some help, please.

all .mov files are not created equal

by seanferd In reply to need help making RealPlay ...

If something was updated, you may have lost the ability to play the files from your camera.

I'd rather suggest trying to play them in a different player - WMP, Quicktime, VLC, or whatever you might have.

PurpleSkys suggestion is very good to troubleshoot RealPlayer itself. Make sure to get any optional codecs for mov files if they are separate.

probably some update issue

I have been fighting some issues on this pc and had to reformat or reimage and start over. But I have saved all my docs, pictures, movies etc.
I'm just trying to get my pc back to a happy and useable status and then leave it alone. I'm not sure what a codec is. I wonder if some other setting somewhere is the cause of this problem. I know nothing ....

That you have as yet not set down your *** in a basic class of one sort or another, swallow your pride as to how elevated you think you are above all this, and learned the overall, instead of your ad hoc approach.

That you "know nothing" is clear. What also is clear to me is that you are winging it on the backs of others -- without apparent recognition or remorse.

I tried to be as clear as I could be.

Heretofore, I transfer my mantle of cryptic to you, CG.

just need help and not santeewelding harrassment

I have little money after being disabled 3 years ago, but I have issues that I need to ask for help in solving on my computer. I am surely not as technically knowledgeable as most of those who read and use TechRepublic, and I am unsure why you continue to follow me and say such mean stuff to me. If this continues, I must ask TechRepublic to remove my account and I will leave you alone, as you would apparently prefer. What a jerk.

I guess that the RealPlayer uses the Quicktime player somehow and perhaps I had not properly installed Quicktime after reformatting my c: drive. So now it works! Cool!

Real Player wasn't the problem

by NickNielsen In reply to cool - got it working

As was suggested earlier, you did not have the proper codecs installed. When you reinstalled Quicktime, it also reinstalled the .mov codec RealPlayer uses to play your movies.
