    Need help picking server soft

    by urbanvisions ·

I’m in the process of starting my own Company. It’s a non profit that will teach kids content creation. Using the latest software like GoLive, photoshop, quark..etc. We will also be branching out into teaching programmimg as I get more funding.
Theproblem I have is picking a server software. It looks like I’ll be able to afford 25 machines. Atleast 5 will be dedicated staff machines that will need e-mail. The others just need the net, printing, and file sharing. I was also thinking about hosting our own website with a box as well, but this is just a thought. It might cost to much to do this.
I was mulling over what to get. I really can’t afford a full time IT person..(yet)I know a little bit of 2000 and some Linux. But I am curious about Mac OSX Server. The plus side of Mac OSX is that for $499 I can get unlimited lic, a unix core, apache’, and a easy to use GUI. Linux is free and MS is everywhere.

I was also thinking about using the new iMacs in the lab. either that or Dell’s. but my space is limited.
    anyideas?

      Hard to argue against Linux

For your particular situation, it is hard to argue against Linux. The cost (free) certainly works and as a server platform, it rivals the best. As a desktop platform, especially for graphics work and DTP, it has some room for improvement. However, you can use Mac machines and Windows machines on a Linux network with no problem.
