First, install all critical and driver update from Windows update. This will take care of many issues.

If the updated drivers are in a ZIP file, you first need to extract all of the files from the archive.
Windows Explorer has built in ZIP functions.

What I do, is create a folder for drivers, and sub folders for each device.
Then copy the ZIP file to the folder, and extract it there.

Then, depending on the driver, you either run the setup program from that folder, or go to device manager, and point the driver wizard to the folder.
In XP, you can access device manager by right clicking on my computer, select properties, click on the hardware button.
